Over the years we have worked with various artists, exhibitions, galleries, art collectors, auctioneers, foundries, moving companies, courier, and freight forwarding companies all over South Africa especially in Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg. We have helped store, move, and ship paintings, ceramics, furniture, bronze statues/sculptures, and other pieces of art you can think of (We have crated several life sized bronze sculptures for
Donald Greig Sculpture Gallery in Cape Town- in case you wanted an example.)
With all this experience this is our own view and what we think one needs to take into consideration when choosing what type of packaging, material or even supplier to use when packaging art:
• value of art piece(s)
• level of protection required vs offered
• Up to 70% lighter than timber equivalent
• end destination regulations and legislation
• ease of disposability
•supplier minimum order size or quantity
• weight of packaging
• mode of transportation
• number of handling times or points
• supplier credibility
There are other factors to consider that matter especially at the receiver's end. These are disposability, reusability, ease of storage, recyclability, and whether or not it is biodegradable. Nowadays, a lot of people consider whether the packaging was created sustainably or with environmentally friendly materials. Another popular element is the unboxing experience, particularly for collectors and art enthusiasts..
